The Legend of Zelda: Ruins.

I love the original Legend of Zelda. In fact, it’s my favorite game of all time. So much can be said about it, and so much has, so I won’t rehash the more common material here. Instead, this will be more personal. One of my favorite aspects about the original game was the cold, lonely simplicity of the labyrinths. The dungeons all had the same architectural style, but different layouts and other variations. They all looked to come not only from the same civilization, but the same builder. Or, to be more out-there, the same imagination, perhaps one shared by a society very different from ours.

This is what I loved most about the original game; the mystery. Hyrule was an empty land bereft of any current civilization. Some people lived in caves, selling stuff or charging money for useless advice. Beyond that? Wilderness and ancient ruins, often with ominous entrances that resembled monstrous heads. It made you wonder who created these places, and why. Another great thing about the game was the manual; some of the artwork was wonderful, especially the artistic interpretation of the simplistic labyrinths. I’ve long had an affinity for the art in the manual, and I had been meaning to do some homages to it for a while now. Well, I finally got around to it, and here is what I came up with;

These will be colored in the future.

Castle in the clouds.

I’ve been working on this for a while. It is a watercolor and ink illustration of a large castle-like structure that is growing out of a pink cloud. The craft in the foreground is simply a flying vehicle.

Unfortunately, the image is very large, and WordPress will not display the actual resolution in the post. It actually looks squeezed. Just click on the image to see the true dimensions.

Old streets.

Two sketches of street/city areas I did a while back. The pier image is supposed to have a sort of surreal, art-deco, Blade-Runnerish feel to it. The other is just some random sketching.

Future City.

Just a futuristic looking city I did a while back. I actually did the sketch and the initial lineart in 2011 or so, if not earlier. I didn’t get around to inking and coloring it until March-April of 2012.

Venetian Flowers.

This began as a desire to draw a venetian mask that was interacting with some leaves and vines in some way. From there it got merged in to another image I wanted to do involving flowers, and another featuring a scene of a city that is roughly inspired by Venice. The city is supposed to look rough, as if it’s only partially formed. Like it’s a dream. This took a lot longer to do that I expected. Anyhow, here it is.

Just a simple wood model.

This was an assignment for Architectural Design 2. I won’t go in to all the details. It’s just a wooden frame for an exploration type assignment. In any case, this was made primarily with basswood, and is mostly held together via zapkicker. There are a few details you can’t make out from this angle. I have more photos of this thing, so I may upload those later.

Misc. Sketches pt. 3

More random sketches. Firion from Final Fantasy II, and some dome shaped structures.

Misc. Sketches pt. 1

Just some random sketches.

Just a page of random sketching. A Townsend bat, a random girl, a symbol for a futuristic school, some glyphs based on the Romulan language, and early roughs of a building that has been seen in one of my other posted sketches.
