Haruhi Suzumiya

Haruhi Suzumiya. Negative space. This is actually a “remix” of an older image I did. The main difference is the added detail to the face, the abstract elements flowing from the ribbon, and thinner linework.

Flow.

Another image inspired by a combination of Giraud and Final Fantasy, Crystals are pleasing to draw. So, here’s another one.

Red Panda: WIP

Just a Red Panda. This will eventually be turned in to a t-shirt graphic.

Future City.

Just a futuristic looking city I did a while back. I actually did the sketch and the initial lineart in 2011 or so, if not earlier. I didn’t get around to inking and coloring it until March-April of 2012.

Mini-illustrations.

Okay, this idea came about suddenly, but it involved some images I had been meaning to create for a while now. First off, these are ‘mini illustrations’. These are done on small bristol boards, each of which measures 2.5 x 3.5 inches. Each board has an image on each side. They were sketched out, and then inked with Micron pens, and finally colored with Copic sketch markers and black india ink, as well as a Copic brush multi-liner.

Now, as to the content. These are depictions of something I’ve wanted to do for a while. I find the idea of a large, dark, interior space such as this to be very frightening. Like an endless, artificial cave that goes on forever in all directions, made up of both expansive nightmarish vistas, as well as claustrophobic, twisting mazes.

The first image I created was the one of the darkened doorway, with the two tan columns on the right wall. Initially, these spaces were going to just depict cold, empty spaces made of nothing but old, worn down concrete. But that wasn’t working. It wasn’t visually interesting enough. At the same time I didn’t want to add anything too ‘conventional’ looking. In the end, I went with the organic sort of columns seen in the image, and tried to draw them in such a way that they could almost be seen as plant-like growths. (This continues my penchant for drawing alien plants.)

The second image I draw, the tall columns with the doorways and the membrane-like growths, is probably the one I’m  the most satisfied with. Yes, those small black dots ARE doorways of average size, which gives you a good idea of the scale here. The curved pedestal image is accompanied by two structures that are meant to echo deep sea tube worms.

The colors used in these were, primarily, cool grey and warm grey. The last image, ‘the Hangar’, contains some browns, tans, and yellows, to create the rust effect on the metal plate.

There’s more to these images than all that, however, and I would love to expand on them in a short story or perhaps a short comic.

Mountains.

This began when I thought of the image of  young woman holding a mountain range. It went from there, as I decided to give her an ethereal, fantasy sort of look, with stylistic lines that hinted at wings. Gray-brown hair, and a white top and skirt, give her an almost monochrome look. I decided to add the water, as if there was a river flowing from the mountains.

One Who Stands Alone Preview.

This is a preview of a larger work. It’s a concept for an outdoor sculpture/art installation thing. More of this to come, obviously.

Two bookmarks.

Just two eco-themed bookmarks. For more information on what a “passiv haus” is, see here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passive_house

The structure in the image isn’t supposed to be a specific Passive House, just a sort of amalgam of what several different ones I’ve seen look like.

Blue Flare.

This drawing went through several conceptual stages, before I finally just started it without much of a set idea and ended up with this. She’s supposed to be floating, and light is coming from the space near her hands.

I always have problems drawing anyone from a lower angle like this, because the face (and the nose in particular) often comes out looking strange.

Potion label.

Okay, this thing is giving me some grief. I posted the non-text version a while back, but getting the text right has been a headache. I still don’t like how it looks.

Anyhow, this is part of a series. It’s a “potion” label, specifically, the potion from Final Fantasy 6. I wanted to do a few potion labels in the style of wine labels, or old medicine jar labels, or something like that. When this is (eventually) done, I’ll do labels for Hi-Potion, X-Potion, and Elixer. Still, I need to refine this one.
